The event was sponsored by the Office of Communication of the United Church of Christ, Inc. (OC, Inc.) and the Telecommunications Research and Action Center (TRAC).

2006 honorees included Katherine Grincewich, Associate General Counsel of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Ken McEldowney, Executive Director of Consumer Action, and Randall Pinkston, CBS News correspondent. The distinguished Parker Lecturer was Amy Goodman, the host and executive producer of Democracy Now!.

For more than 20 years, the Parker awards have been given to individuals from across the nation whose work embodies the principles and values of advocating for the public interest in advancing social change and closing social divides. The lecture series and awards honor the Rev. Dr. Everett C. Parker, founder and director emeritus of the Office of Communication of the United Church of Christ, for his pioneering work in broadcast reform.
