TRAC Statement On Bell Atlantic's SmartTouch Long Distance Plan

WASHINGTON, -- K. C. Choi, Senior Research Associate for the Telecommunications Research and Action Center (TRAC), issued the following statement today.

"The SmartTouch plan is unique in that it is a prepaid calling plan for 1+ long distance service, and it allows budget conscious consumers to track their spending with every call. SmartTouch may be particularly attractive to low-volume customers as well as those who want to closely monitor their long distance spending."

"The SmartTouch calling plan fares well when compared with similar pricing plans offered by AT&T, MCI and Sprint. Bell Atlantic's decision to offer a plan without monthly or per-call fees, waive the access or PICC fee for three months, and fold all local, state and federal taxes and fees in to the basic per-minute charge, makes it very competitive for many consumers."

"Although the SmartTouch plan offers consumers several ways to put money in their account, the pre-pay feature may be particularly attractive to consumers who are comfortable purchasing services with a credit card over the Internet."

"Consumers who choose SmartTouch should not put more money into their account than they realistically need. Money put in the account does not earn interest like in a bank. The key is to know your budget, put that amount in your account, and stick to it."
