TRAC APPLAUDS FCC JUNK FAX ENFORCEMENT: CALLS FOR ACTION ON SPAM NEXT
The Federal Communications Commission today announced (http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/) a proposed fine against Fax.com, Inc. of $5,379,000 for sending consumers unsolicited advertising known as "junk faxes." The following statement in response can be attributed to Samuel A. Simon, Chairman of the Board of TRAC, the Telecommunications Research and Action Center:
"TRAC applauds the FCC's enforcement campaign. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act prohibits sending unsolicited fax advertisements to consumers. It appears that Fax.com did so hundreds of times.
Now is the time for the Federal government to also take on Internet spammers. Even though the TCPA doesn't apply to e-mail, the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission need to collaborate to utilize existing tools to attack unwanted e-mail. The cost and inconvenience to consumers of unsolicited e-mail is equally harmful as unsolicited fax advertisements."
